Maryhelen Leckie Goicoechea was born July 4, 1946 in Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Samuel Leckie and Margaret Chambers Leckie. She passed away June 19, 2016 at her home in Pinedale. Maryhelen attended schools in Rock Springs, graduating from high school in 1964. Maryhelen went on to enroll in higher education at Colorado State in Fort Collins and Western Wyoming and Casper Junior Colleges before transferring to Westminster College in Salt Lake City where she earned a B.A. in Business Administration. Maryhelen worked for the Mountain States Bell Telephone Company and then the Post Office in Rock Springs, beginning her career with the United State Postal Service. She would go on to work in Post Offices in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, becoming Post Master in Challis, Idaho, and Shell and Pinedale, Wyoming. Maryhelen had a deep love and appreciation for animals, especially her dogs, horses and sheep. Her childhood summers were spent at her grandfather's homestead, the Leckie Ranch, in Big Sandy, Sublette County. While helping on Jim Magagna's sheep ranch near her own family's place, she met Juan Batista Goicoechea, a Basque sheepherder. They were married on July 13, 1992 in Pinedale. Many people in Sublette County remember Maryhelen as the Pinedale Postmaster and later for her work with the Sheriff's Department in animal control. She is survived by her husband, Bautista Goicoechea, and sister, Maxine Leckie, both of Pinedale, and several cousins.
